Fracture Fixation and Implants

OBJECTIVE: To critically evaluate whether open fracture fixation is a significant risk factor for latent osteosarcoma development.

STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study.

SAMPLE POPULATION: Dogs undergoing open fracture repair and dogs diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

OBJECTIVE: Our objectives were: 1) to review the complications associated with stabilization of appendicular fractures in cats and small dogs using locking compression plates (LCP), and 2) to identify factors that could influence fixation construct stability.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: To report outcomes in dogs with distal radial osteosarcoma (OSA) treated with metal endoprosthesis limb-sparing surgery and compare outcomes between 2 generations of endoprosthesis.

ANIMALS: Forty-five dogs with distal radial OSA treated with endoprosthesis and chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of shock wave therapy (SWT) on radiographic evidence of bone healing after tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO).

OBJECTIVE: To compare the bending properties of String-of-Pearls® (SOP) and Limited Contact Dynamic Compression Plate® (LC-DCP) constructs in orthogonal bending directions.

METHODS: 3.5 mm SOP and LC-DCP plates were fixed to a bone model simulating a comminuted tibial fracture. Specimens were non-destructively tested in both mediolateral and craniocaudal bending for 10 cycles. Bending stiffness and total angular deformation were compared using parametric analyses (p <0.05).

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of titanium mesh on guided bone regeneration when used, either alone or in combination with autogenous bone block graft, in a canine ulnar model.

OBJECTIVE: To compare a locking plate (LP) with pin and tension-band wire (pin/TBW) for fixation of mid-patellar transverse fractures.

OBJECTIVE:  To evaluate retrospectively the effectiveness of the Locking Compression Plate® (LCP), in the form of either a straight or notched head T-plate, for the treatment of fractures of the distal radius and ulna in a series of 20 toy and miniature breed dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize clinical and pathological features of implant-associated neoplasms in dogs.

DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study.

ANIMALS: 16 dogs with implant-associated neoplasia and 32 control dogs with osteosarcoma without implants.

PROCEDURES: Medical records of dogs with tumors associated with metallic implants (cases) treated between 1983 and 2013 were reviewed. Two dogs with naturally occurring osteosarcoma (controls) were matched to each case on the basis of tumor location, age, and sex.

OBJECTIVE: To document cumulative initial experience and long-term follow-up of the use of rhBMP-2/CRM for reconstruction of large mandibular defects (≥5 cm) in dogs.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
